The Texas Supreme Court will hear arguments Tuesday over whether ONCOR, a major electricity provider, can be held liable for rolling blackouts during Winter Storm Uri in February 2021, exactly four years ago.

The storm caused widespread outages as operators of Texas' power grid ordered power to be shut off in four-hour intervals to prevent a total grid failure. Nearly 250 people died due to the storm’s impact, and hundreds of lawsuits followed.

A lower appeals court previously dismissed the claims, ruling that utilities like ONCOR are not liable for the outages. The state Supreme Court’s decision on the matter is expected in the coming months.
