A Travis County's Precinct 4 Constable is revising his post from last week's ice storm in Austin.
The original post from George Morales suggested about 250 people were "fighting over" so-called "free food" outside an HEB supermarket.
Morales says he should have chosen a better metaphor because he now acknowledges there were no fights. Rather, he says people were trying to "gain access" to the food.
In any case, the food was not meant for a give-away. Morales says the food was spoiled because that HEB had lost power and the store was unable to keep perishables at their proper temperature. For that reason, the supermarket was not able to donate the groceries to food pantries.
When rumors spread about "free food", the streets around that HEB became gridlocked as people braved the icy conditions hoping to score freebies.
Police had a hard time sorting out the traffic jam.
