Two inmates who escaped from the Orleans Parish Justice Center in New Orleans on May 16 were apprehended Monday in Huntsville, Texas, following a high-speed chase, authorities confirmed.
The fugitives, identified as 34-year-old Leo Tate and 29-year-old Jermaine Donald, were part of a group of ten inmates who broke out of the facility by dismantling a cell door and breaching a wall behind a toilet. The pair were spotted in Walker County, leading to a pursuit that ended near U.S. Highway 190 and Geneva Road. Texas Department of Public Safety officers, assisted by local law enforcement, arrested both men without incident.
Tate was originally incarcerated on charges including burglary, possession of a firearm by a felon, and illegal carrying of a weapon. Donald faced charges of second-degree murder, aggravated battery, and possession of a firearm by a felon. Both are now facing additional charges related to their escape and will remain in custody in Texas pending extradition to Louisiana.
Their capture brings the total number of recaptured escapees to eight, with two—Antoine Massey and Derrick Groves—still at large. Authorities continue to urge the public to report any information regarding the remaining fugitives.
The jailbreak has prompted investigations into potential security lapses and assistance from jail staff, as well as the arrest of several individuals accused of aiding the escapees.
