The south Texas town of Uvalde will have to hold another special election after Mayor Cody Smith resigned effective immediately due to medical concerns.
A new mayor will be elected in November.
Smith was elected to office in a specially-called election this past November to replace Don McLaughlin, who resigned from office to run for state representative.
Smith had served two terms as Uvalde's Mayor more than a decade ago. His last year was 2012.
Smith's sudden announcement coupled with the surprise resignation of the police chief comes after an independent investigation into the Robb Elementary shooting found all UPD officers present that day should be exonerated of any wrongdoing.
