Texas voters will return to the polls on Tuesday to vote in the state's primary election runoffs.
Runoffs all over the state will impact how the Texas legislature looks when it convenes in January – maybe none more so than the effort by the state’s top elected officials to oust Speaker of the House Dade Phelan, who is headed to a runoff against David Covey in the House District 21.
"Dade has done some damage, he killed border security bills, he killed property tax relief bills, he killed school choice, he killed election integrity bills. Then, if that wasn't bad enough he killed the bill to keep illegal (immigrants) from voting in Texas. You need to know that," Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said at the state GOP convention on Thursday. … it is time that we elect Republicans in the Texas House that won’t work with Democrats to control the agenda in the House."
Gov. Greg Abbott is campaigning against incumbent Republicans who opposed school choice and Paxton is doing the same against House members who voted for his impeachment last year.
This episode also examines the race to replace longtime Rep. Kay Granger (R-Fort Worth) and who will be the Dallas County Sheriff.
SMU political science professor Matthew Wilson breaks down what to know head of the runoffs.
