Grant Merrill, owner of Southwest Media Group, is witnessing firsthand the devastating impact of the wildfires that have been raging across the Texas Panhandle.

As the owner of several TSN-affiliated radio stations in the area, Merrill is at the forefront of keeping the community informed, connected, and mobilized during this crisis.

The largest of the wildfires, the Smokehouse Creek Fire, which started in Hutchinson County is spanning over 800 square miles and affecting 500,000 acres, was 0% contained as of 6:47 a.m CT on Wednesday.

"This fire has not been contained at all," Merrill told KRLD. "It started in Stinnett, which is north of Borger, and in Northern Hutchinson County, about 48 hours ago."

Merrill expressed hope that the fire could start to be contained on Wednesday, after a cold front brought much cooler temperatures and calmer winds to the area.

But the unrelenting spread of the fires over the week has led to widespread evacuations, displacing thousands of residents and causing significant property loss.

"People have almost had to be nomadic, because every time they got settled yesterday, this fire was starting to chase them," Merrill said.

The scale of the displacement and the rapid progression of the fires have created an environment of uncertainty and fear for those in the line of the advancing flames.

However, in the face of this crisis, Merrill also shared stories of resilience and solidarity.

"All of these communities have already started to come together," Merrill said. "We've heard from people all over Texas who have been very kind in lending their support."

He spoke of the overwhelming support pouring in from individuals across Texas, expressing a desire to help and uplift the affected communities. Merrill described people reaching out to radio stations, asking, "How can I help? What can we do?"

Merrill also shed light on the remarkable efforts of volunteer firefighters and the community's proactive response.

"The volunteer firefighters and the volunteer departments up here are just absolutely amazing," Merrill expressed.

"We've seen a lot of supply drives starting...making sure that these firefighters who are out fighting these blazes have the water, they have the snacks, they have everything that they could possibly need to be sure that they can function just for the next couple of days."
