The season that many consider to be the most beautiful time of year in Texas is here. That is Wildflower Season.

Texas has more than 5,000 species of wildflowers and though we cannot list them all, there are some stand-outs, especially if you're new to the state.

The most famous is of course the bluebonnet, the state flower of Texas. It's that blueish purple flower now creating waves of color along Texas highway, road sides and front yards.

Indian paintbrushes are the bright orange blooms that are starting to pop up in North Texas.

Evening primrose looks like a large, lavender buttercup. Prairie verbena are gentle clusters of small pink or purple flowers that sit atop of stems.

The tall yellow flower with 5 small petals is the Texas Yellow Star. Finally, there's also the sunflowers. Texas has 19 varieties of wild sunflowers, including the Maximilian and the swamp sunflower.

Some of the best places to check out Texas wildflowers are the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in southwest Austin and the Ennis Bluebonnet Trails that will open on April 1st.
