Police officers and firefighters in Flower Mound took quick action on Thursday when they got a call about a child trapped in a hot car. The call came in around three when the heat index in north Texas was 107. The mom of a ten-month-old child said she was bringing her child home from a visit to the doctor's office when she accidentally locked the vehicle.
"She started the car and placed the child in the car seat, laying her keys on the back seat," said Deputy Chief Dean Feldpausch with the Flower Mound Fire Department. "When she closed the door, the car locked - and the engine shut down."
When firefighters arrived on the scene, the captain gave them an opportunity to use tools to open the door - but also gave them a time limit.
"He said 'gentlemen, you've got 60 seconds to break in the car'. So the crews went to work. They got real close...you can actually hear him counting down," said Deputy Chief Feldpausch.
The incident was captured on video by a camera worn by one of the responding officers. It shows firefighters breaking the window of the vehicle when the captain gave the order.
"These are extremely hot conditions, we've got a ten-month old in the back seat, so we're not going to mess around," Feldpausch said. "In these temperatures, the inside of a car can get really hot, really quickly."
Firefighters checked out the infant at the scene and also put some plastic over the broken window on the vehicle.
"Mom did exactly the right thing," said Feldpausch. "Everything was done exactly the way we would ask for it to be done."
