Eta forecast to become hurricane in the Gulf

Tropics

Tropical Storm Eta is forecast to move into the Gulf of Mexico by Monday morning.

The National Hurricane Center says after moving through the Florida Keys, the system will move into the Gulf and become a hurricane again.

"On the forecast track, the center of Eta will pass near or over the Florida Keys tonight and early Monday, and be over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico late Monday and Tuesday."

As of Sunday night, maximum sustained winds were near 65 mph with higher gusts.  At 74 mph, it becomes a hurricane.

"Some strengthening is forecast during the next day or so and Eta is forecast to become a hurricane as it moves near or over the Florida Keys tonight and early Monday."

A turn to the northeast is expected Tuesday afternoon, on a path for somewhere between the Florida Panhandle and South Florida.

The forecast cone does not include any other parts of the Gulf Coast.

New Orleans is not forecast to feel any impacts from Eta.
