Well, our rain-free streak continues to climb here across North Texas. We’re now at 64 consecutive days without measurable rainfall at DFW Airport. We only hit 99 degrees yesterday, so we’re stuck at 52 triple-digit temperatures for the year.
I think we’ll be right around 100 degrees or slightly below today and tomorrow, and that’s what the records are showing as well.
High pressure is still in control and centered over the southeastern United States, but it will slowly begin to weaken as we move into early next week. That will allow a weak cold front to settle into North Texas and bring scattered showers and thunderstorms back into the forecast Monday through Wednesday.
Exactly where that front stalls will determine where those showers and storms develop during the afternoon and evening hours. It’s still too early to tell exactly who will get the rain, how much rain we’ll see, or how widespread it will be.
Now, if you’re heading outdoors this weekend, we’ve got plenty going on. There’s Oktoberfest in Addison, Grapevine’s Grapefest, and the Plano Balloon Festival.
For the balloon festival, winds can become a problem when they get much above roughly 10 to 12 miles per hour, but the good news is winds are expected to be fairly light, especially during the morning hours. The early morning inversion can also help create favorable conditions for the balloons.
So if you want to get out early, before 7 a.m., and watch those balloons take off, that can be a beautiful sight as the sun comes up on the eastern horizon.
If you’re going to be out at one of these festivals, remember to stay hydrated. The heat will be a big factor, with temperatures getting into the upper 90s to around 100 degrees. Wear light-colored clothing, use sunscreen, and grab a hat.
And please don’t forget about the most vulnerable people around you — especially small children, pets, the elderly and those with disabilities. Make sure everyone has a cool place to take a break from the heat.
As we head into next week, if thunderstorms move into your backyard, temperatures could quickly drop from the 90s into the upper 70s. But some of those storms could produce frequent lightning, small hail and, with the stronger storms, damaging winds.
I can’t rule out a few severe thunderstorm warnings Monday and Tuesday, depending on where that front sets up.
We’ll see what the front brings us on Wednesday and Thursday, but after that, temperatures look like they’ll settle closer to average as we move toward the following weekend.
And remember, fall officially arrives Tuesday.
