Good morning, everyone, and welcome to Wednesday!
It's August, ladies and gentlemen, and climatologically this is the hottest time of the year. Average afternoon highs are around 97°, with average morning lows near 77°. These are as warm as our average temperatures get across North Texas.
The good news? By about August 15th, our average temperatures begin a slow downward trend. We lose roughly a degree every three to four days, bringing average highs into the lower 80s by the end of September and into the lower 70s by the end of October. So be patient—we just have to get through August and about the first three-quarters of September before we really begin to notice a meaningful change.
In the meantime, don't forget about your lawns, trees and shrubs. With August being our driest month of the year, most yards only need a good, deep soaking about once a week. Water is AWESOME, so use it wisely.
As for our weather pattern, high pressure remains to our west while another ridge builds to our east. That leaves a weak spot in the upper levels of the atmosphere right over North Texas. We'll still be close enough to the western ridge to push temperatures to 100° or slightly above today and tomorrow, around 100° on Friday, and then into the upper 90s this weekend as humidity begins to increase.
That weakness in the atmosphere will also allow for a few late-day showers and thunderstorms over the next several afternoons, mainly along and east of a Bonham–Greenville to Canton line. Most of these storms won't develop until after 4:00 or 5:00 p.m. and will fade quickly after sunset. Any storm that does develop could produce frequent lightning, brief heavy rainfall, and strong, gusty winds.
Looking ahead to next week, the ridge over the southeastern United States is expected to expand westward over North Texas. That means triple-digit temperatures are likely to continue, with no significant relief in sight for the foreseeable future.
