ALHAMBRA, Calif. (KNX) — Hazardous materials cleanup crews worked overnight Monday through Sunday to deal with a large gasoline spill in Alhambra that dumped thousands of gallons of the substance into the area's wash system.

Pasadena firefighters were called to the Union 76 gas station at Glenarm Street and Arroyo Seco Parkway after a vehicle collided with a gas pump, according to Pasadena spokesperson Lisa Derderian. An emergency shutoff valve intended to stop leaks malfunction and power was cut to the station, she said.

As a result, about 1,300 gallons of unleaded gasoline were spilled, flowing into storm drains.

Pasadena and L.A. County Hazmat units handled cleanup. L.A. County Public Works crews addressed gas that had flowed through the wash system beyond city limits.

As of 5:40 a.m. on Monday, Derderian said the smell that had been pervading neighborhoods near the spill site and affected storm drains had dissipated.
