Los Angeles Police Department officers responded at 5:55 a.m. Tuesday to the plant in the 4600 block of Colorado Boulevard, just east of the Golden State (5) Freeway, and found one man suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman said.

The man was identified Wednesday by the Los Angeles County Office of Medical Examiner as 54-year-old Patrick Uthe.

A second man was also found with multiple gunshot wounds at the location. He too was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The medical examiner identified that victim as 35-year-old Benjamin Fraser.

Both men were city sanitation employees, Mayor Karen Bass said in a statement issued Tuesday night.

"My heart breaks for this loss of life," Bass said in the statement. "My office has deployed our Crisis Response Team to provide support to employees and the Personnel Department is making mental health counselors available.

"There is no active threat to public safety," the mayor added.

The Los Angeles Times and NBC4 both reported that Fraser was the victim of a possible murder-suicide.
