A magnitude 4.6 earthquake was reported about 7 miles northwest of Malibu, according to the USGS.

It happened at 1:47 p.m.

Dr. Lucy Jones told KNX News there is no correlation between the earthquake felt in Southern California and the one that struck the Mauna Loa volcano in Hawaii hours earlier.

Captain Erik Scott with the Los Angeles Fire Department told KNX News the department was entering “earthquake mode.”

“That's when firefighters from all 106 of your neighborhood fire stations are going to provide a complete strategic survey of the entire Los Angeles [area], that's 470 square miles, and we ensure safety,” he said. “So that's happening actively and it'll take a little while for them to complete.”

When asked if the earthquake could impact the ongoing mudslide issues from this week's record-setting storm, he said it could.

"The additional movement and vibrations on already saturated soil can cause some more movement," he said. "And that's part of our survey that is taking place currently."

He added that no significant damage was reported in the Los Angeles area.
