State public health officials have reversed their ban on cheerleaders at high school sports games.

They announced this morning - cheerleaders "will be allowed" on the sidelines at football games.

The change reclassifies sideline cheer from a supporting group to a recreational sport, subject to the same rules as outdoor competitive cheer.

Bands though are still not permitted and only one parent an athlete will be allowed to attend.

Republican Assemblyman Jordan Cunningham from the San Luis Obispo area calls that's "dumb."

"The parents deserve to get to go watch their kids. We are about to have professional sports allowed to have spectators again. Whereas these sports are going to be more limited than that, that makes no sense," he says.

A woman, whose daughter plays high school basketball, tells KNX 1070 News she's angry.

But state health officials say they just want to keep everyone safe and healthy.
