Spirit Airlines canceled 261 flights Monday and 165 on Sunday, according to USA Today. Passengers on the airlines also reported hundreds of delays on both days.

The cancellations left Los Angeles International Airport travelers scrambling for new flights or alternative means of travel. Lines in the terminal spilled out onto the sidewalks on Monday.

Some of the scrubbed flights left people hanging around inside Terminal 5 wondering what to do next.

One couple was trying to fly home to Cleveland and told KNX they keep running into new challenges.

"We were in the airport waiting. All of a sudden, we get a notification I got a notification our flight is cancelled. They booked us another flight on a Delta one to try and get us home for today. But then they canceled that on us."

Spirit reportedly canceled nearly a third of its flights by midday today.

The airline’s cancellations affected travelers far beyond L.A.

“It looked like a hurricane shelter," Rebecca Osborn told USA Today of Orlando International Airport. Osborn and her boyfriend, Eddie Gordon, were traveling to Philadelphia after vacationing in Puerto Rico.

When they arrived for a layover at the Florida airport, Osburn said the couple’s flight had a number of delays before it was ultimately canceled.

"There were people everywhere: little kids, old people," Gordon said of the line of passengers looking for a refund after the flight was canceled.

"[Spirit] never came out and gave any type of explanation or offered anything."

Philadelphia International Airport was scrambling Monday morning as well. At least 10 Spirit Airlines flights to and from were canceled, some at the very last moment.

According to airline tracking site Flight Aware, those 10 flights account for about 34% of Spirit’s daily operations in Philadelphia.

In a statement, Spirit Airlines said it is working to get things back on track. According to Newsweek, the airline cited "operational challenges" and weather as the causes for the travel interruptions.

"We are experiencing some cancellations today resulting from the culmination of weather events and other operational challenges across various parts of our network," said the statement.

"We are working directly with our Guests to handle their needs."
