Flood watches, evacuation orders in L.A. and Santa Barbara Counties as storm approaches

LOS ANGELES (KNX) — Several warnings and evacuation orders were in effect for Monday and Tuesday as Southern California prepares for what the National Weather Service is expecting to be one of the most significant storms of the season.

In Los Angeles County, a flash flood watch is in effect from 3 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday for three burn scar areas. Residents and businesses living in and around the Bobcat, Ranch2, Dam, Lake, and Palisades burn scars are asked to prepare before the storm hits and be aware of evacuations once it is in full swing.

"Flash flooding and debris flows caused by excessive rainfall are possible ... with rainfall rates locally up to one inch per hour will be possible," according to an NWS report, adding that "Heavy rainfall could trigger flash flooding of low-lying areas, urbanized street flooding, and debris flows in and near recent wildfire burn scars."

The L.A. County Fire Department shared several tips to prepare — including acquire sandbags (which can be done here), monitor radio and TV news for updates, stay away from areas vulnerable to flooding and never attempt to cross flood areas. To view more tips, click here.

Santa Barbara County
Further north, a flash flood watch in also in effect from 6 p.m. Monday night to noon Tuesday in Santa Barbara County — where the Alisal burn scar lies.

An evacuation order is also in effect for parts of the area, according to KEYT News, a TV station in the region.

"An evacuation order has been issued due to an incoming storm arriving [Monday] with the potential to produce flooding and debris flows," the county said in a statement. "This Order is effective Monday, Dec. 13 at 12 p.m."

The mandatory evacuations apply to areas west of Las Flores Canyon, east of Mariposa Reina, south of West Camino Cielo and down to the ocean. To learn more, click here.

San Bernardino County
In San Bernardino County the Sheriff's Department has issued an evacuation warning for Lytle Creek, Oak Glen, Yucaipa's North Bench, Forest Falls, Angelus Oaks and Mountain Home Village.

The NWS shared the image below to indicate times of heavy rain and how much rain is expected to fall in certain areas of the region.
