LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The Los Angeles City Council voted today to proceed with establishing a fine for illegal parking in bus lanes.
The council instructed the city attorney to prepare an ordinance amending the city code that would also authorize towing for unlawful parking in bus lanes. The city plans to use automated cameras to enforce parking violations.
According to a September report by the city's Department of Transportation, parking enforcement officers currently cannot issue citations for people who illegally park in bus lanes unless they also commit further infractions.
The council directed the department to submit a budget request for two traffic officer positions to support the citations program, which the report said would cost an estimated $134,000.
The program is expected to be operational by this fall, according to the report.
