LA County officials hope to get most adult residents vaccinated in time for the start of the summer.

The number of doses being sent to the county each week is going up.

And it's expected to hit 700,000 by the end of the month.

It's unclear how shipments to the county might be affected by production problems involving the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

The New York Times reports up to 15 million doses may have been affected.

Barbara Ferrer, LA County's public health director, says about a fifth or fewer of the doses expected to be sent here in the coming months are Johnson & Johnson.

"If LA County receives on average 576,000 doses a week starting in April we can expect to reach 80 percent vaccine coverage for people 16 and older in just 12 more weeks. Reaching such a milestone is possible with increased allocation and it will dramatically change the trajectory of the pandemic here in LA County," Ferrer says.

Vaccine eligibility will be expanding to all residents 16 and older on April 15. That's an estimated 8.3 million people. So far, more than 4.5 million doses have been administered in LA County. Many have been the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines, which require two doses.
