A man who allegedly sexually assaulted and attempted to kidnap a woman while posing as a police officer was charged on Tuesday.

In late December, 55-year-old Martin Lopez allegedly approached a woman outside a Long Beach restaurant where he “falsely identified himself as a police officer,” according to the District Attorney’s Office.

Lopez then allegedly sexually assaulted the woman “under the guise of a search” and tried to get her to go into his car. After he was confronted by several witnesses, he fled.

Lopez has been charged with one count of attempted kidnapping, one count of sexual battery by restraint, and one count of second-degree robbery, according to the L.A. County District Attorney’s Office.

Lopez was arrested on Jan, 4. His bail was set to $2,410,000.

If convicted he faces 77 years to life in prison.

His arraignment is scheduled for January 24.
