LOS ANGELES (KNX) – As Service Employees International Union Local 99 and United Teachers of Los Angeles prepare to kick off a three-day strike on Tuesday, one advocacy group member says she stands with them.
Jenna Schwartz, co-founder of Parents Supporting Teachers, told KNX In Depth she sees the strike as a warning to the school.
“I view it as kind of like, ‘hey, this is how bad it is without us,’” she said. “These are the workers that don't get as much credit. Sometimes they don't get talked about as much, recognized as much, but they are truly the workers that keep our schools running.”
Schwartz clarified that while nobody wants a strike, it’s worth it for the workers to get a fair contract and have a living wage.
“We can have three days of a challenge, right?” she said. “Three challenging days maybe. But if it ends with these workers earning enough that they can live, maybe bring them out of homelessness, bring them out of food insecurity. It’s worth it.”
While she said she’s hopeful SEIU and UTLA can reach a deal with LAUSD, she’s ready to take her son to march with the unions.
“It’s going to be a lesson in civics for three days,” she said.
