SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (KNX) – Three people have died in the San Bernardino Mountains since the beginning of the winter storm, according to Dawn Rowe, the chair of the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors.
Rowe, who represents the third district, told Chris Sedens that of the three deaths, one of the victims was in hospice care, one was due to a coronary heart attack, and one was a pedestrian vs vehicle collision.
"We have not had any reports of bodies in snow or anything...and I just got off the phone with Sheriff Dicus who confirmed that they are the only three that we are aware of," she said.
It comes hours after an organizer for a donation relief effort assisting residents impacted by the historic storms in the local mountains said volunteers are finding dead bodies in some homes.
Lisa Griggs, one of the organizers for Operation Mountain Strong, told L.A. Morning New that relief workers own personal volunteers have found people dead in their homes.
“There has been loss of life and, it's very unfortunate,” she said. “So, you know, we're trying to evacuate as many people as we can off of this mountain. It is a ticking time bomb up here…”
Griggs couldn’t give an exact number as she said the numbers started coming in on Monday.
“As we started to kind of get our neighbors out, extract them from their windows and pull them out, we started kind of keep connecting the dots more around the mountain realizing that this, this is way bigger than even I had originally been exposed to,” she said.
Rowe said the focus is on food deliveries to those stuck at home, as well as continuing efforts to the plow the roads.
