A rolling strike by unionized University of California academic workers over the handling of pro-Palestinian demonstrations is expected to expand to UCLA and UC Davis on Tuesday.

A rally will be held at 12 p.m. on the UCLA campus.

This is the second round of strikes from United Auto Workers Local 4811, which represents nearly 50,000 teaching assistants, readers, tutors, student researchers, and academic researchers. Workers from UC Santa Cruz were the first to strike.

Unionized academic workers called on UC schools to give amnesty to employees and students who face disciplinary action or arrest due to the campus protests, as well as their right to free speech and political expression on campus. They are also asking the school to divest from companies profiting off the war and to disclose investments and funding.

A UCLA student told KNX News’ Jon Baird he feels the protests have been disruptive.

“I do pay for tuition and to learn at this school, and I do think this will affect finals in the last couple of weeks of school,” he said.

The union voted to authorize a strike on May 15.

On May 21, university officials announced that the school filed for injunctive relief with the state Public Employment Relations Board to ban the strike. The state’s labor board rejected the request on Friday.
