LOS ANGELES (KNX) - A tentative labor agreement was reached between United Teachers Los Angeles and Los Angeles Unified School District.

At 6 am this morning, the UTLA member bargaining team reached a tentative agreement with the district that goes well beyond the scope of traditional bargaining and makes significant progress for educators and students,” UTLA said in a statement.

The agreement, according to the union, includes a 21 percent salary increase, increased staffing of Psychiatric Social Workers, Pupil Services and Attendance Counselors, School Psychologists, and College Counselors, class size caps for Special Education classes, and compensation for excess initial assessments among other things.

UTLA President Cecily Myart-Cruz said in a statement to City News Service the tentative agreement gives the school district a chance to become more successful.

"We held the line during bargaining on a number of initiatives because educators are the experts on what has the ability to transform LAUSD into a more equitable environment that not only improves students' learning, but also the quality of life for L.A. families," she said.

LAUSD Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho called this agreement a "necessary step" to help the school district become the top choice for teachers and employees.

"I am grateful that we reached an agreement with UTLA in a manner that reflects the dedicated work of our employees, provides a better academic experience for our students and raises the standards of compensation in Los Angeles and across the country," he said.

The tentative contract, which covers 2022-25, needs to be ratified by UTLA members and the LAUSD Board of Education

It comes days after the union rejected a contract offer from the school district, which included an overall 19 percent raise, staffing incentives, and cutting class sizes by two students.
