New details have emerged about the attacks on two women at the Venice Canals on April 6. Anthony Jones, 29, of Las Vegas, is charged with two counts of rape, mayhem, torture, attempted murder, and more related to the attacks.
“These are probably some heinous sexual assaults that I've ever seen. The level of brutality that was engaged in was very reprehensible," said District Attorney George Gascón.
Jones is accused of walking behind a woman around 10:30 p.m. on April 6, hitting the woman on the head with a hard object, sexually assaulting her, and beating her. He’s also accused of doing the same thing to another woman about an hour later. The second woman has skull fractures and remains in a coma.

Los Angeles Police Department detectives said they identified Jones through security video from neighbors and businesses. He was arrested the night of April 11 in San Diego. Police said Jones doesn’t have a criminal history in L.A., only minor offenses in other areas.
Jones is being held on $3 million bail, but Gascón. is asking for no bail.
Jones is set to appear in court for the first time Monday. If convicted as charged, he faces life in prison.
A GoFundMe was created for one of the victims. As of Tuesday morning, $84,542 has been raised.
