A new app aimed at reducing tensions between a driver and a deputy during a traffic stop was launched in West Hollywood on Wednesday.

The app, called SafeStop, partnered with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s West Hollywood station and the city to offer “a dynamic approach to bringing community and police together to be part of the solution,” according to a press release.

Lt.  Hector Veyacities with the Sheriff’s Department told KNX News’ Pete Demetriou the traffic deputy would have the app set up on a separate phone in his car.

“If the deputy activates his red-blue lights, the person who has already downloaded the app will open the app and send a message to the deputy, and if the deputy has the app open, will receive a phone call from them and they'll be able to FaceTime each other and communicate with each other,” he said.

If the driver does end up getting a ticket while using the app, the app’s creators say they will pay $20 toward the driver’s citation.
