April is World Autism Month, representing an opportunity to increase understanding and acceptance of people with autism, fostering worldwide support and inspiring a kinder, more inclusive world.
Melissa Rivera is a middle and high school special education teacher at Sierra School of San Diego, which serves students in grades 1 through 12 and adults aged 18-22 with autism spectrum disorder, specific learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, other health impairments and emotional disabilities.
Melissa’s students are 13 to 18 year olds who have moderate disabilities and function on kindergarten to third grade learning levels. In this interview, Melissa discusses how using meditation and the Calm app have made a difference in the classroom.
