The Padres lost to the Mets 2-1 on Monday in New York, but the Padres had plenty of opportunities to break the game wide open. The Padres had four consecutive singles in the 1st inning, but came away with no runs after both Jake Cronenworth and Manny Machado were thrown out at the plate by right fielder Carson Benge. After the Mets scored two runs in the bottom of the 1st, the Padres responded by loading the bases with no outs, but only drove in one run on a deep fly ball to the warning track off the bat of Fernando Tatis Jr. that was nearly a grand slam. With two outs in the inning, Jake Cronenworth lined a single to left field, and Xander Bogaerts was thrown out at home trying to score from second base, becoming the third Padres' baserunner thrown out at home plate in the first two innings. After that, Mets starter Nolan McLean settled in, allowing just that lone run over six inning despite allowing six hits, walking four and hitting a batter. The Padres had another opportunity in the 7th inning while trailing 2-1. After Luis Rengifo singled to left to begin the inning, Fernando Tatis Jr. grounded into a double play, ending any chance at a rally, as the Mets held on for a 2-1 win. Robbie Ray will make his third start for the Padres on Tuesday.
