The Padres defeated the Dodgers 4-2 on Thursday night, taking 2 of 3 on the road in LA to win the series and punch their ticket to the playoffs in the process. The Padres built on their MLB-best second half record to clinch a wild card berth prior to having to face the Diamondbacks and risk being swept and missing the playoffs. Tyler Glasnow was lights out for the Dodgers, carrying a no-hitter into the 6th inning of what was a scoreless game at the time. 20-year old Ethan Salas broke up Glasnow's no-no with an opposite field single to left. He then went first to third on a single from Fernando Tatis Jr., and came home to score on a sac-fly from Dustin Harris for the game's first run. The Padres added three more runs in the 7th inning on 4 hits to give themselves a 4-run cushion, but the Dodgers wouldn't go away easily. After scoring on a balk from Adrian Morejon in the 8th inning to make it 4-1, Mason Miller entered the game to close things out in the 9th. With two away, he struck out Tommy Edman for what should have ended the game, but Salas didn't catch the ball and it rolled all the way to the backstop, allowing Edman to reach first base. After advancing to second on defensive indifference, Shohei Ohtani drove him in with a double to left center, bringing the tying run to the plate in Mookie Betts. But as Miller has done the entire season, he locked in and got Betts to ground out to Manny Machado and end the game, and the celebration was on! The Padres will now return home for a three-game series against the Diamondbacks to wrap up the regular season with a chance to secure homefield advantage in the Wild Card round.
