PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Atrial fibrillation is an irregular heartbeat that can lead to the development of blood clots being sent throughout the body.

The most effective way we have to treat atrial fibrillation is to either use procedural techniques to correct the problem and get the heart rate back to normal, or to give blood thinners to the patient to reduce the chances ascending clots throughout the body.

Now, there is a new report which finds that there is an association between atrial fibrillation and the risk of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease.

But those who undergo treatment can dramatically reduce this risk. The bottom line is to not ignore atrial fibrillation.
