PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Alzheimer's disease is the leading cause of age-related dementia, affecting about 5.7 million people in the U.S.
For years, there has been hope to develop a preventive treatment for dementia. We know that "brain plaque" is part of the development of certain forms of dementia.
In addition, a protein called tau is also associated with the development of dementia. Now, there is news of new research to develop effective therapy via a new vaccine to remove "brain plaque" and tau protein.
The work is very new in development, but the hope is that one day a vaccine could be developed and introduced into the patients to attack dementia at the earliest stages.
