PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Mountain biking is growing in popularity, and with our milder winters, it has become more than a summer sport.

But there is a frustrating health issue a significant number of mountain bikers have to deal with: handlebar palsy.

When a biker grips the handlebars, the repeated shocks that occur while bouncing over rocky terrain can lead to the palsy. It has several symptoms: numbness, tingling, and pain in the arms, wrists and even the little finger.

Prevention is the key. Take the following steps: First, make sure your bike is the right fit for your size. Wear padded gloves and pad your handlebars. Sit in a more upright position.

The goal is to put less weight and pressure on your hands and wrists.
