PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A few dozen bakers will be gathering at the Loews Hotel for an annual cake-making competition, and there will be no limit on creativity.

Colleen Kriebel, owner of Kriebel's Custom Bakery, is a return participant of Let Them Eat Cake, benefiting the Variety Children's Charity.

She said she's prepared to put hours of work into her submission.

"People get more and more competitive every year. You notice the talent as soon as you walk in the room," she said. "Your jaw will drop to the floor."

This year, the theme is "Under The Sea."

"If it's an animal or an octopus or a treasure chest, you're gonna see it all," she added.

The cake competition initially started as a showcase for brides, and it technically still is.

"They call it a bridal show, but they don't look like wedding cakes," said Kriebel, noting trends have gotten more unique through the years. "Gone are the days of every tier has to be exactly 4 inches tall."

She said wedding cakes don't even have to be cakes.

"I just recently did two different interesting wedding cakes. One was a sticky bun tower and then the other one was a cannoli tower."

They don't have to be sweet either.

"People are buying wheels of cheese and stacking them tall and calling it their wedding cake," she added.

But Kriebel promises there will be a lot of sugar at Let Them Eat Cake, which takes place place Feb. 24. Tickets are $40 in advance or $50 at the door, and you can sample as many slices as there are competitors.

"They give you a box and then you just start walking around, collecting your samples. You can eat on the spot or take it home with you.

"Bring your insulin pen, it's crazy!"
