PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Results from a new School District of Philadelphia survey shows teachers and parents prefer a back-to-school plan that has students attending classes in person on alternating days. The findings differ from teachers union survey results released on Monday.

Parents, school staff and community members responding to the school district's survey said they would prefer that students return to schools in person on alternating days to create social distancing.

Setting up morning and afternoon shifts ranked second, and having students report to school on alternating weeks was third.

That one-week-in-person, one-week-online option was the top preference found in a survey administered by the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers.

In the district survey, 27% of respondents preferred an every-other-day return, while 18% preferred every other week.

Speaking to parents on Facebook, Superintendent William Hite said the district will be following guidance from the city and state health departments — so any plan won't be set in stone.

"We are actively planning for these fluctuating realities, and we ask that our families and communities join us in planning for them as well," he said. "Things will be ever-changing."

The district survey included responses from 12,000 school staffers, including teachers. Hite has said the district, using feedback from its survey, would release a back-to-school plan on July 15.
