Philly officials reminding people to apply for federal earned income tax credit

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Philadelphia Department of Revenue is trying to help people get what could be a lot of money this tax season, as an estimated 45,000 residents are eligible for the earned income tax credit but do not apply.

Revenue Commissioner Frank Breslin says the average refund in Philly is $2,500 and the maximum benefit is more than $6,500.

"With the poverty rate where it is in Philadelphia, we know that this money could really be a game changer for a lot of people," Breslin said.

Breslin's department is partnering with some nonprofits in the annual campaign to get the word out so that everyone who is eligible can get their cut.

He says the program also benefits the city.

"We don't want that money left in Washington, we really want it to come here, go to our residents, help our local economy. That's a possible infusion of $100 million into the local economy, so it's really a win all around," he added.

To qualify, you need a minimum income of $1, be between the age of 25 and 63, or have a qualifying child and a Social Security number.

You can get started at www.YouEarnedItPhilly.com, where Breslin says you'll see a list of tax preparation locations to finish the job.

"We've established a list of 27 tax prep sites throughout the city of Philadelphia," he said.
