PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Although they've been given the green light to open, salons and barbershops in our region are still trying to stay afloat throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

The Turning Points barbershop in Folcroft, Delaware County used to see between 15 and 20 customers a day.

But shop owner Dwayne Campbell said since they reopened under state regulations, they're only seeing six to eight people a day.

"People still coming in, but it's not how it used to be. But it is better than staying at home," he remarked. "They are afraid of the COVID, so they can't come in. They are just staying away."

Campbell says even though business is slow to pick up, it beats the more than five months he had to stay home.

Smith says her business in Levittown, Bucks County is following the reopening guidelines, but it's been a long process coaxing her customers back.

"Some of them, they haven't come back," she lamented.

In order for shops like theirs to be able to get back in the swing of things, Smith and Campbell both said they need more federal and state grant money.

"Every legitimate registered business who was in operation during that time should have been compensated because it's hard. A lot of businesses haven't reopened," Smith said.

"Whatever they can do to help," Campbell echoed, "we'll take it."
