Bike shop booming during coronavirus pandemic

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The pandemic has forced most businesses to close and send the workers home. But at least one shop that's still open is doing big business.

Bike shops are considered essential, because two wheels are the only transportation available to some people. According to Brian Hackford, co-owner of Keswick Cycle Shop, with so many people home, the weekdays are just as busy as a normal weekend this time of year.

"We'd bring in 20-30 repairs a day. Now we're doing that during the week and we've had to limit the amount of repairs that we bring in for the safety of our employees and customers," he said.

Hackford said most people want bikes tuned up so they can get out of the house and enjoy a little social distance in the fresh air. While his staff is working, it's not business as usual, because customers are not allowed in the store.

"We also need to disinfect every single bike that comes into the store, and then we leave every bike in kind of a quarantine mode for 48-72 hours before our mechanics even look at it. It's adding a whole other level of complexity to our repairs," Hackford explained.

Each bike is then disinfected and put back into quarantine before it's put out in front of the store for a safe pickup by the owner.
