PHEAA encourages college bound students to take advantage of extended financial aid deadline

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio)  The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency is encouraging college bound high school seniors to fill out the necessary financial aid forms before the May 15 deadline.

PHEAA board chair Mike Peifer understands with schools being closed, it may be difficult for students to navigate the steps they need to take to get federal financial aid.

"Our students typically have procedures in place through their local schools whereby they have the ability to meet with guidance counselors and PHEAA programs to help them and to walk them through these procedures,” he said.

Pennsylvania school services manager William Lindsey says nearly 31,000 fewer applications have been submitted compared to this time last year, which is why the application deadline has been extended from May 1 to May 15

"A proactive approach is critical to ensure that all students are on track to take advantage of the financial aid they may be eligible for,” Lindsey said.

To complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), go to www.studentaid.gov.

Once the FAFSA is completed, students can start their Pennsylvania state grant application.
