PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- While many are spending their spring break soaking up some sun, others are volunteering to make a difference for families in need.
About 10 students from Assumption College in Western Massachusetts were gutting a two-story, three bedroom twin home in Norristown, Montgomery County.
It's part of the Habitat for Humanity Collegiate Challenge taking place across the country.
Junior Cory Soper is one of the volunteers rehabbing the house.
"As a theology major, trying to build up people's souls, so to speak, it's like something you put on a Hallmark card, but it's true," Soper said. "You are trying to fix people souls and here you are trying to fix a house."
It's senior Kate Brice's fourth year volunteering for Habitat.
"I think as college students we are kind of stuck in a bubble up on our campus," Brice said, "and it's really important to step outside our own comfort zone and just really give back to the community because we, ourselves, have been given so much."
Cara Przybyolwicz is the volunteer and community affairs manager for Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery and Delaware Counties. She says the volunteers are building quality of life for needy families.
"We partner with a lot of different corporations, other schools and churches in the area. We'll take volunteers whenever we can get them," Przybyolwicz said. "We want to help families to have stable housing. We are hoping to have that right fit."
The home was donated to Habitat for Humanity.
Applications are being accepted from low-income families to buy the home.
