Eagles acquire Aussie Matt Leo via International Pathway Program

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Matt Leo has an eccentric resume.

After playing rugby in Australia, he started working as a plumber, but one moment on the job changed his life forever.

“It was a hot, humid day. We were crawling through this little passage and I turned to them and said, ‘Man, I’m too big to be doing this. I miss sports and I should be playing sports still,’ ” he recalled.

Leo decided to follow his gut. He spent time in junior college, then played football at Iowa State. He recently signed with the Eagles through the International Pathway Program, which allows players outside of North America to chase their dreams of playing in the NFL.

Now, he’s trying to prepare for his chance at the NFL — while dealing with coronavirus pandemic restrictions.

“The Eagles and obviously my position coach, Matt Burke, has informed me of times and dates that we are going to start as a group,” Leo noted. “As long as I can kind of jump in and have these Zoom meetings with my position group and get ahead of the bowl, that’s all I can care about right now.”

He’ll be able to bond to two other Aussies on the Eagles, with Jordan Mailata and Cameron Johnston already on the roster.

The Aussie is excited for his chance to play in front of the team’s rabid fan base.

“Hearing about Philly’s crowd base, I’m proud to be a part of this,” he added. “It’s that die-hard, loyal fan base.”
