The Highspire Hills Farm in Glenmoore, Chester County, houses 2,600 chickens that produce about 5,000 dozen eggs a month. Several restaurants and grocery stores depend on those eggs to serve and sell to customers. And without fans to keep air circulating, those animals would be in big trouble.
Deb Ellis and her husband, Duane, own and operate the business.
"And its all run by computer. All run by temperature, humidity. And so if we had a big rainstorm right now, the curtains would close, the fans would continue to run," said Deb.
She also says that when the temperature goes up, egg production goes down.
"We keep a record every single day. Its actually on a spread sheet, but with the heat you are going to see that number go down."
And they would have an even larger problem if the power were to go out.
"We are just going to have to keep an eye on them all day long. If the power went out ... no air movement at 95 degrees ... I would be in trouble, because they would die," she said.
