Pennsylvania Horticultural Society enlists community gardeners to fight food insecurity

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio)  The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society is launching a new program through their website to help encourage gardeners to grow more of their food themselves, their families and their communities.

The goal of PHS's Harvest 2020 is to have 100,000 people sign up to pledge to grow their own food, share the food they've grown, or make monetary donations to help low-income gardners get supplies.

"Even before COVID-19, one in five Philadelphians did not have access to three meals a day,” she explained.

Anyone can go onto the PHS website and sign a pledge, and shesaid those who sign up will be given free information and tips about home gardening.

"We're going to be equipping growers with online education resources on food gardening and harvesting,” she added.
