PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A local university is offering a housing option that is a first.

Students at LaSalle University will soon be making their housing selections for the fall, and new this year is a dog-friendly residence hall.

Upperclassmen who choose to live in St. George Hall can bring their pet dog to live with them as long as the pet is under 30 pounds.

"If you are going to live alone, then that makes it pretty easy regarding a roommate. There wouldn't be a roommate to be worried. But if you are going to sign into a room with a pet with a roommate, the roommate has to sign off to say they agree to live with a particular dog and the other person," said Dr. Dawn Soufleris, LaSalle's vice president of student affairs.

Emotional support animals are allowed in the residential system.

"We have right now 11 dogs, two cats and a Gecko," she added.

This pet dog program is a first in the region. Pet cats are not yet allowed.
