PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphians are really feeling the bitter cold just a few days ahead of the official start of winter.
Many along Kelly Drive Thursday morning braced the artic air for their daily dedicated jog, well before the sun was even out.
Kelley, who lives in Bensalem, decided to head out for a run, but his running partner was nowhere to be found.
"I was supposed to meet a friend here at 5 and he didn't show up," he said. "I was here all dressed up so might as well get going."
He layered up — "thermal Nike gloves, I have two thermal Nike shirts; one is a little thicker under this" — for a 5-mile workout.
It also doesn't hurt that Kelley has experience with the frigid conditions.
"I grew up in Michigan, I lived in upstate New York. I'm used to cold, for the most part," he said. "As long as the regular temp is above single digits, I can usually handle even a little bit of the wind chill factor. Anything below zero, I won't run."
Thursday will see plenty of sun, but don't let that fool you. Temperatures are staying in the teens but feel like single-digit conditions with the wind chill. The city issued a Code Blue, since the high is 29 and the low is 21 without the wind.
Sounds like reasonable enough conditions to skip a workout, but Gary from the Northeast disagreed.
"Why not (run)? It's just what we do," he said, as he continued on his morning routine.
