Shapiro wrote a letter to congressional leaders saying the EPA and the Department of Defense have failed to protect the public from PFAS, the forever chemicals that have been linked to cancers, fertility issues and other severe health issues.
The BuxMont Coalition for Safer Water says Shapiro is pushing for passage of the National Defense Authorization Act, which is required for the Defense Department to operate.
"Right now, there's legislation in there to help with health studies, bio-monitoring, clean up, there's legislation that's dealing with the lack of transparency that we are getting as communities that live near the DoD sites," said the coalition's Joanne Stanton.
Stanton and coalition co-founder Hope Grosse say another thing that is necessary to fight the contamination is a Maximum Contaminant Level. If PFAS in water samples exceed that level, immediate remediation would be required.
