PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A "stay at home" order is in effect in New Jersey, one of the hardest hit states in the country with 1,914 and 20 coronavirus-related deaths as of Sunday. With a new case in Salem County, every county is affected.
Gov. Phil Murphy took to ABC's "This Week" to once again urge residents to take social distancing seriously, and to appeal for more protective equipment for healthcare workers.
People staying home and non-essential businesses closing has to be done, according to Murphy.
"Unless you're essential, unless you're helping us in the fight, we need you to be at home and we need you even at home to social distance," he pleaded.
He said the healthcare system doesn't need the added stress, as they're already in need of supplies. The governor said the state is turning over every stone, from the public and private sectors to nonprofits, but they are in need of a lot more personal protective equipment for healthcare workers.
"We are desperate for more PPE," Murphy said. "We've had a big ask into the strategic stockpile in the White House. They've given us a fraction of our ask."
He also reiterated the importance of refraining from panic.
"We won World War II, not because we panicked, we were smart, we were aggressive, we worked hard. That's what we're gonna need right now," he said.
As for testing, Murphy said a second state-run site will open Monday in North Jersey. The first is open in Bergen County. There's testing in South Jersey, but they're from major health systems, not the state.
As for the economic impact, Murphy emphasized the need for $100 billion for New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York and Connecticut, in order to get businesses and workers the help they need.
The state also launched a website with information about COVID-19, as well as assistance for businesses and the general public at https://covid19.nj.gov/.
