DOYLESTOWN, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — A Bucks County man will spend the rest of his life behind bars after pleading guilty to the murder and attempted rape of his 14-year-old cousin.

Bucks County judge Wallace Bateman told 21-year-old Colin Haag it’s hard to imagine a more heinous crime as he sentenced him to life, plus at least another 30 years in prison.

Haag pleaded guilty to the attempted rape and murder of 14-year-old Autumn Bartle.

He showed no emotion as he was sentenced, or when family members remembered Autumn as “a spitfire," a “force of creation” and someone who always brightened a room.

“She was a unique little individual. And God only knows what she would have done with her life if she was given the opportunity to live life to the fullest," said prosecutor Jennifer Schorn.

Autumn died three days after the attack.

Prosecutors say an autopsy found more than 160 stab and puncture wounds along with a gunshot wound to her temple. And before she died, an exam showed evidence of rape. Prosecutors say blood was found in just about every room of the house, and there was a bloody handprint on the outside of a bathroom window as though she tried to escape out of the window. Haag's lawyer says Haag’s mother killed herself while he was on the phone with her, and that he wanted to be a gangster rapper and immersed himself in that culture.

When police caught up with him, he shot himself in the throat, telling them it was an unsuccessful attempt to kill himself because he didn't want to go to prison.
