2 men charged with robbery of armored truck in University City

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Federal authorities have indicted two Philadelphia men on robbery, gun and extortion charges for trying to rob an armored truck last year in University City.

On the morning of Aug. 1, 2019, officials say 28-year-old Tyree Holmes and another man — both wearing masks and gloves and carrying firearms — tried to rob an armored truck containing $434,000 in cash near 35th and Market streets.

When a shootout followed, Holmes dropped the bag and intended to take off in a car, which authorities say was driven by 40-year-old Jerry Collins.

Holmes was arrested in February, and Collins was arrested on Friday.

If convicted, both men could face life in prison.
