NEWARK, Del. (KYW Newsradio) — A University of Delaware student is among the six people who were shot at a Halloween gathering in Newark, Delaware, on Saturday night, just off the university's campus.

Officials say the 20-year-old is in serious condition in the hospital. He was shot in the back and suffered a collapsed lung.

The other victims are between the ages 15 and 21; the 21-year-old is the only person out of the hospital.

Police said one of the victims, a 16-year-old, is facing charges for carrying a loaded gun.

Newark police said the shooting happened around 11:15 p.m. on Main Street, near the intersection with Chapel Street.

Hundreds of people from the university and beyond had packed into the street when shots rang out, sending the crowd running in multiple different directions.

Landen Singleton was there, told NBC10 that he immediately ran towards the scene to try to help one of the shooting victims.

“I'm over there, I get down, I kind of like bend down a little bit, take off my shirt, fold it a few times, put it on the gun wound,” he said, “and he squeezes my hand, kind of like it's his last hope."

Singleton said he wasn't able to sleep a minute last night after seeing several shooting victims.

He described one person shot in the leg, one in the back, and one in the stomach.

Police said all six victims were taken to local hospitals to be treated.

Delaware Governor Matt Meyer released a statement responding to the shooting in Newark and another that occurred in Ellendale, Delaware, also on Halloween night.

"No family should have to receive the call that someone they love has been shot. Today, people in Newark and Ellendale are facing pain and fear that no one should have to endure,” said Meyer. “My heart is with those injured, their loved ones and every Delawarean who has been impacted by these tragedies. I condemn these senseless acts of violence, and gun violence in all its forms.”

The governor also said Delaware State Police are helping Newark Police with the investigation.

Officials are asking anyone with photos, video, or any other details to contact Newark Police.
