“This is, in fact, the first purpose-built offshore wind port in North America, and this is the key to unlocking potentially thousands of jobs in manufacturing and in assembly and in operations in New Jersey,” Johnson said.
They’re looking at a public-private partnership to pay for construction of the port, which is to be located next to the Salem Nuclear Power Plant complex in Lower Alloways Creek Township.
“Eventually, the wind port will house multiple factories where the parts for offshore wind turbines will be built as well as the staging areas to move them directly from port to the offshore wind farms,” explained Gov. Phil Murphy.
There are promises to utilize diverse union labor in its construction, as well as including women- and minority-owned businesses in the project.
